Sarawak Energy has announced two major sustainability initiatives unveiled at the SAREF 4.0 forum, strengthening its net-zero pathway. The first is a Carbon Study Permit (CSP) granting legal approval to conduct feasibility studies for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) projects within its hydropower catchments. The second is a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to bring global conservation expertise to Sarawak.

The Carbon Study Permit is pivotal for advancing projects expected to generate over 250,000 carbon credit units to offset emissions from hard-to-abate sectors, supporting the company's 1.5°C Business Ambition. The collaboration with IUCN will embed global best practices in biodiversity management, using internationally recognised tools like the Red List of Species and the Global Standard for Nature-Based Solutions. These initiatives aim to enhance water resource resilience, protect biodiversity, and deliver long-term value to local communities.

These partnerships were highlighted at a forum where government officials urged a commitment to the circular economy. The Deputy Minister called on policymakers and industry leaders to commit to these principles, collaborate across borders, and champion sustainable practices, emphasising that "don't waste the waste." Together, these efforts position Sarawak Energy and the ASEAN region as potential leaders in sustainable energy by combining strong collaboration with measurable, nature-positive outcomes.
