The Natural Resources and Environment Bill 2024 was unanimously passed by the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) on November 12, 2024. An agreement was reached between the federal government and the Sarawak government to transfer regulatory authority over environmental matters to Sarawak in phases.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said with this autonomy, Sarawak’s ability to preserve its unique ecosystems while fostering sustainable economic and social development will be strengthened.

By instituting this stringent legislation, this Bill addresses the critical need to combat climate change and environmental degradation.”
