KUCHING, Aug 11: Sarawak has launched the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), a transformative blueprint to steer the State towards a low-carbon, secure and inclusive energy future, which Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says is the only policy of its kind in Malaysia.
Sarawak launched the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), uniting strategies for energy security, environmental sustainability and economic affordability. By 2050, it is projected to add RM550 billion to GDP, create over 80,000 high-paying jobs and attract up to RM700 billion in investments, with most benefits for low and middle-income groups.
The policy focuses on renewable energy, natural gas, energy efficiency, low carbon mobility, clean hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCUS) and alternative energy, supported by strong governance, financing, infrastructure, technology and skilled workforce development. Aligned with the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 and Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, it positions Sarawak as a leader in renewable and low-carbon energy.
Sarawak is well-positioned for a low-carbon transition with green energy from its hydropower plants and the CCUS hub off Bintulu. While hydropower projects such as Bakun Dam once sparked intense opposition from NGOs and indigenous communities over land rights and deforestation, these developments are now proving pivotal for the State’s progress. Whether driven by foresight or political strategy, the outcome is clear as Sarawak is benefiting from past efforts, and the focus now is on moving forward for a greener future.
