Sabah embracing ESG for sustainable development, resilient future

State Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor emphasized the government's dedication to enhancing environmental stewardship, social well-being, and governance structures to ensure a resilient and prosperous future. Sabah's extensive reforestation programs, planting over two million trees, aim to restore degraded landscapes, enhance biodiversity, and sequester carbon, thereby mitigating global climate change impacts. These initiatives reflect the holistic approach of ESG principles.

Sabah's commitment extends to innovative public-private partnerships like the Industrial Tree Plantation (ITP), which aims to alleviate pressure on tropical timber and forests. Cited by Hajiji, "Planting trees in areas degraded by logging activities will go a long way in achieving a carbon neutral nation by as early as 2050" .

Additionally, Sabah is leading the transition towards renewable energy, with over 50% of its energy production coming from solar and hydroelectric power in 2024. This shift not only reduces carbon emissions but also promotes social inclusivity by providing cleaner, affordable energy to rural communities. Sabah is also focused on preserving indigenous rights and empowering rural communities through investments in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, ensuring equitable access to opportunities for all.
