Govt aims to table National Climate Change bill in 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is looking to table the National Climate Change bill in 2025.

In a written reply, Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said that the ministry is at preliminary stage of drafting the bill.

"The development of this bill will adopt a whole of nation approach that includes an inclusive engagement process with stakeholders at every level of society.

"In addition, this bill can ensure that mitigation and adaptation actions can be carried out effectively at the state and local government levels when enforced later," he said.

He was responding to question Onn Abu Bakar (Batu Pahat-PH) on if the ministry intends to enact the Climate Change Act for Malaysians to make this issue a shared responsibility.

In September last year, former Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had said that the bill was initially expected to have been completed by the end of last year.

Earlier this year Nik Nazmi said that the government does not intend to rush tabling of the bill.

He said that though it is important to have such legislation in place, he said that having a bill for the sake of a bill is deemed pointless.
